About Caroline

Caroline is a senior at McLean High School in Northern Virginia. Her work moves between the concert hall, the newsroom, and questions about how public policy shapes opportunity.

She has studied classical piano for more than eleven years. Alongside performances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and with Capital City Symphony, she has played for patients, senior communities, and families served by local organizations.

Her Davidson Fellows project applies what she has learned as a musician to a practical question: how could an organized library of recordings help music therapists find suitable material? In separate economics research, she studies the relationship between high-skilled immigration restrictions and regional productivity.

Caroline is editor-in-chief of The Highlander, co-president of Hopeful Minds Outreach, and a leader in her school’s economics and mock trial programs. She hopes to continue studying economics and public policy while making room for music, writing, and service.

Scaling Sound: An Affordable Approach to Democratize Music Therapy

Music therapy can be difficult to access. For her Davidson Fellows project, Caroline asked whether a searchable library of annotated music could help trained therapists work more efficiently.

Her pilot Music Knowledge Base uses recordings of her own piano performances. It describes pieces by characteristics including tempo, rhythm, tonality, sensory load, cognitive demand, and arousal level. VJ Hyde of Children’s National Hospital and other music therapy professionals advised her on therapists’ workflows and gave feedback on the prototype.

The system is intended to support selection and personalization by qualified professionals. It is an exploratory tool, not a substitute for clinical judgment or a clinically validated treatment.

How High-Skill Immigration Restrictions Eroded Regional Productivity

What happens to regional output when policy constrains access to specialized labor?

Read the working paper

Caroline uses the 2017 Buy American, Hire American executive order as a policy shock. Her paper compares states with different levels of H-1B worker exposure using a difference-in-differences framework.

The working paper reports a 2.8% relative decline in output for more exposed states after the policy change. That figure is Caroline’s estimate from this analysis, not an independently established causal result.

Tyler Cowen noted the paper on Marginal Revolution in June 2026.
